It’s “Witching Hour 666”!!!
That’s right: 6 years of Witching Hour at the Straz!
Each year we push ourselves to take bigger risks, and this year is no exception. We also try to check something off our theatrical bucket list: one year, we “murdered audience members”, another year we surrounded the audience with performers in plague masks, we’ve Hailed Satan (™) countless times and we just get louder! We know we have more to do if we don’t feel at least a little fear pucker.
This year, we’ve collaborated with local composer Tom Sivak to build two new songs, just for Witching Hour. We’re also featuring one of his original compositions from his show, “Love V Death”. Our selection is from the “Death” portion of the show, and details the horrific story of Carl Tanzler and the mummified remains of his former TB patient, Elena de Hoyos. We’re deep lovers of research, but this story just got more and more fucked up the more you read about it. Classic Florida Man, as the true story happened in Key West. A story so dark even Alix couldn’t cope? Sivak wrote it into an opera, and we get to perform one of the songs. We’re so lucky!
